One Day Online Program on "NEP 2020 and English Language Education" Date: 8th July 2026 Time: 04:30 to 07:30pm NEP 2020 and English Language Education The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to transform education in India by promoting holistic, learner-centered, and competency-based learning. In English language education, the policy focuses on developing communication skills, critical thinking, creativity, and multilingual competence rather than rote memorization. Key Features include • Learner-Centered Education, where students actively participate in learning, Teachers act as facilitators instead of mere instructors and Learning becomes interactive and meaningful. • Competency-Based Learning, with students able to Communicate effectively, read with understanding, write creatively, listen actively, think critically and solve problems. • Multilingualism, where Mother tongue/local language is encouraged in the early years, English is taught as a language for communication and global connectivity, Students develop proficiency in multiple languages. • Experiential Learning through Projects, Role plays, Storytelling, Games, Discussions, Real-life situations • Continuous Assessment with focuses on Understanding, Application, Skills, Creativity rather than memorization. Session 1 Aligning English Grammar and Pedagogy with NEP 2020 Resource Person: Dr. Manisha Khanna Traditional grammar teaching emphasizes memorizing rules and completing exercises. NEP 2020 recommends teaching grammar in meaningful contexts. Traditional Approach was teacher-centered, emphasised on memorization of rules, teachers conducted isolated grammar exercises on Error correction, with focus on written tests only NEP 2020 Approach is student-centered, where Grammar is taught in context, with Communication-based learning, Interactive activities, Continuous formative assessment. For instance, in traditional teaching method, students could be asked to define noun, learn five types of nouns. In NEP Approach, Students read a short story and identify naming words used in the story before discussing the concept of nouns. Principles of Grammar Teaching under NEP 2020 emphasise on Contextual learning, Functional grammar, Collaborative learning, Communication-oriented teaching, Inclusive classrooms, Digital learning integration, Reflection and self-assessment, Session 2 - Activity-Based and Competency-Based Grammar Teaching. Its objectives are to Increase student engagement, improve language skills, promote creativity, encourage collaboration, Make grammar enjoyable. The Various Classroom Activities could be Grammar Games Role Play, Story Completion, Picture Description, Group Discussion, Sentence Rearrangement and Grammar Through Songs and Poems. Competency-based teaching focuses on what learners can actually do with grammar in real-life situations. It emphasises on inculcating Core Competencies so that students should be able to speak accurately, write meaningful sentences, understand spoken English, read with comprehension and Use grammar appropriately in context NEP 2020 envisions English language education as a tool for developing communication, creativity, and critical thinking rather than simply teaching grammatical rules.
